During the 2017 season Serina’s rudder started making knocking sounds. There seemed to be excessive play on the pintles. After discussions with Simon in the autumn, we decided it was was time to investigate.
Here’s what we discovered when Simon removed Serina’s rudder. A badly-worn pin/”stump” at the bottom of the rudder.

Where does this fit?
The rudder “stump” drops into the socket shown below. I wish I knew what these parts were called…
The solution
So here is how Simon tackled it. He built up a new stump using copper pipe and solder.
And checking that the plastic sleeve fits over the new “stump”.

We will need to monitor this repair to see how it weathers with use. A more extensive repair may be necessary, but for now it was good to see this issue addressed.
