2019-20 Winter Maintenance

Not knowing what the Spring of 2020 was going to bring the world, we were lucky in starting the 2019-20 maintenance work early. Serina came out of the water in November 2019 and went back into the water on March 3rd 2020.

We planned a number of improvements this year. Some were to make life easier – such as the improved storage in the Cuddy. Others were to address wear and tear – such as replacing the copper hatch trim with stainless steel. The copper was weeping green oxide onto the deck, and last year’s beautiful lacquering was not enough to fix it, so time for the copper to be replaced.

Probably the biggest project was the fitting of the bracket for the electric outboard motor. I bought the outboard to use with the dinghy but thought, if I was carrying it on Serina, wouldn’t it be good to be able to use it as an auxiliary – if the diesel ever failed. Perhaps not the best argument ever, but it was a fun project and has turned out well.

Cuddy

  • Installing chart stowage in the cuddy
  • Installing storage for “spares” boxes
  • Installing quick-access storage for flares container

External

  • Replacing the copper hatch trim and slides – with stainless steel
  • Scrubbing off old anti-fouling, filling and re-priming, then new anti-fouling
  • Fitting a clip to hold the hand-held VHF radio in place
  • Fitting a bracket to hold the electric outboard motor

Masts and Spars

  • Repainting all masts and spars
  • Replacing the leather chaffing “sock” on the main spar – with a rope alternative
  • Adding a rope chaffing “sock” to the mizzen spar
  • Fitting a VHF aerial to the mizzen mast
